In bed with:

I go deep with intriguing humans, artists, entrepreneurs, and thought leaders every second Sunday ( From June 2 ). My guest & I have a duty to drop the facade & reveal our true self by having deep, powerful and completely vulnerable discussions that aim to guide, inspire and motivate YOU.

In Bed with : Kym Ellery

KYM ELLERY | Founder and Creative Director of ELLERY

Kym Ellery is one of those rare designers who was seemingly just ‘born to do this’. Drawn to design at age 3, learning to sew by age 8, celebrated in the Art Gallery of WA at 16, and launching her own eponymous label by age 23 – Kym Ellery is nothing short of an enigma. As one of Australia’s most celebrated fashion exports, the industry was rocked by the recent announcement that Ellery will be exiting the Australian market. In this episode, we hear from the woman behind the iconic name who for the first time really opens up about the sacrifices she has had to make in the name of her business, coming to terms with what actually makes her happy and the desire for a family of her own.

We both discuss similar experiences in taking risks and backing yourself to achieve your own version of success, and how Kym learnt to navigate the business side of fashion early on during her career at RUSSH. Kym shares hers challenging moments where she felt the most out of her depth and overcoming that fear to embrace her true potential. Kym weighs in on the collective experience of a new generation of creatives surrounded by tech and how this will shape a future industry.

RJ says:

The advice about getting a business degree or at least learning about the business-side of things is something I think I needed to hear. My parents did not have much business acumen, and I take after them in that. I have a hard time understanding financial things. If I learn more about it…I should be able to have more time to do the creative things I am more drawn towards! Definitely going to look into at least taking some classes.

Oh, growing up surrounded by nature and family sounds so wonderful! Sometimes when I get overwhelmed, I just want to feel the dirt between my toes and the wind upon my skin. It makes me feel so much more grounded and calm.

Thank you for another enlightening episode!
